Why Kerala Professionals Are Learning German — And How to Start From Zero
Germany's Skilled Immigration Act has made it significantly easier for qualified Indian professionals — especially in healthcare, engineering, and IT — to work and settle there, but nearly every visa and job pathway requires demonstrated German proficiency first.
Why German, and why now
Germany has a well-documented shortage of skilled workers in healthcare, engineering, IT, and skilled trades, and has actively simplified visa pathways for qualified foreign professionals. The one non-negotiable requirement across almost every pathway — work visa, Ausbildung (vocational training), or university study — is a minimum German language level, usually B1 for work and higher for regulated professions like nursing.
How the A1-to-B2 pathway works
German is taught in structured CEFR levels — A1 (absolute beginner) through B2 (upper intermediate) — with each level building directly on the last. Most learners need 3–4 months per level with consistent study. Nurses and other regulated professionals typically need B1 or B2 depending on the German state and profession-specific requirements.
